Program

Fans of band music in San Antonio will have not one, but two opportunities to commemorate our nation’s founding as the Heart of Texas Concert Band celebrates Independence Day with two performances of its traditional July 4th concert.

At 3:00 in the afternoon of Saturday, July 3rd, the band will appear in the Amphitheater at Morgan’s Wonderland, the world’s first Ultra-Accessible Family Fun Park located just off Interstate Highway 35 and Thousand Oaks in north east San Antonio. This wonderful site with its excellent outdoor performance venue is an ideal location for an outing for the whole family. Parking is free at the park. Details on admission to the park can be found at http://www.morganswonderland.com/index.html

At 3:00 in the afternoon of Sunday, July 4, the band will appear at The Alamo, the Cradle of Texas Liberty in a second performance of the same program. The lawn behind the shrine is a picturesque site for a band concert, but be sure to bring a hat and sunscreen for the afternoon sun and blankets or lawn chairs for comfortable seating during the concert. Admission to The Alamo is free, but patrons will want to allow extra time for parking in downtown San Antonio. More information about this historic location can be found at the official website of The Alamo: http://www.thealamo.org/main/index.php

The concert will include traditional 4th of July favorites such as Henry Fillmore's march “Americans We” and “Armed Forces - the Pride of America” - a medley of the official songs of the five branches of the military services. Also on the program will be “Casey at the Bat,” a dramatic reading of the classic baseball poem with band accompaniment, and medleys of tunes by beloved American composers Richard Rodgers and Aaron Copland. Vocalist Alyssa Bradford will be heard in Gershwin’s ”Embraceable You” and “Over the Rainbow,” and Rob Rogers will lift our spirits with Lee Greenwood’s ”God Bless the U.S.A.” Together with a few selections by the “March King,” John Philip Sousa, the concert should last about an hour and fifteen minutes, and is sure to please everyone.

Admission to all performances by the Heart of Texas Concert Band is free.
